4 Great Grout Cleaning Tips

Many renters and homeowners appreciate tile floors because they're easy to keep clean. Spills on tile can easily be wiped up with a mop or a soft cloth. However, grout can be a little trickier. Unlike tile, grout is usually made from semi-porous material that can hold onto dirt and grime. If your grout is looking dingy and worn, here are four things you can do to fix it.

1. Use the right cleaner.

You can find cleaning products specifically made to clean tile grout. These products are more effective than all-purpose cleaning supplies. Use grout cleaner and a grout brush that is shaped perfectly to get into the nooks and crannies of your grout. Make sure you work with grout cleaner in a well-ventilated space and always protect your hands with gloves.

2. Use a steam cleaner.

If you want a deeper clean, you can benefit from a floor steamer. Home floor steamers are relatively inexpensive. They use ordinary tap water heated until steam forms. The high temperature of the steam can lift stubborn stains out of your grout. It has the added bonus of killing germs and bacteria that can make you and your family sick, which makes steam cleaning a great choice for families with kids who often play on the floor.

3. Try a bleach solution.

Bleach is great for restoring clothes and surfaces to their former white color. If your tile is severely discolored, you may be able to fix it with a diluted bleach solution. Apply bleach carefully to avoid staining anything you don't want bleached. After the bleach has sufficiently lightened your tile, thoroughly rinse it away with water.

4. Hire a grout cleaning service.

If it's been a long time since your grout has been cleaned, the job might be too daunting for you to tackle alone. A grout cleaning service has the tools and cleaning supplies needed to get even the tough stains out of your floor grout. Hot water extraction is the most common method used; it's similar to pressure washing but without the mess, since the water utilized is vacuumed up immediately.

Most floor cleaning services charge by the square foot, but you can still shop around to find the most reasonable rate. Once your grout has been professionally cleaned, you can choose to do your own upkeep using these home cleaning methods. Or if you're busy and you prefer the convenience of having the task handled for you, you can schedule recurring cleaning appointments with companies like Archway Brick and Tile.
